Mmm, another lovely piano solo, with some playful motifs. Yep, I am already pleased. Although, obviously, I was a little wary considering the title. But I was recommended this by a friend who knows their shit, so let’s get into it, and how I ended up feeling about it.

So, essentially, Furry Shades of Gay is a collection of gay stories in a VN, with some shared characters between the six stories, where the choices aren’t simply chosen, but you play a match-3 game to achieve.

Well, it continued to give a good first impression, with the story of a slutty mutt in a maid costume, looking to ensure his daddy (for non-BDSM folks, not daddy daddy) destresses… And that he gets punished at the same time. Top bratting form, clever little trollop there… And the affection in it is clear, which is good!

And then the second story put me off for a bit, because… Robbie. Dude. Bruh. I get you’re horny, but seriously, flirting and grabbing ass and being so assertive to someone new? No. No, that’s shit behaviour nobody should imitate.

But it was the third story, with a man meeting an old friend and maybe initiating something for old times’ sake, a quick fling, that I noticed something else. Something that’s pleasant to see. Sometimes, the match-3 is tough for character reasons. Wolfgang, the shy guy hit on by Robbie in the second story, finds it hard to be assertive. Cameron is reluctant to say hi and initiate things, because he’s a safe guy now, not the wild fun lover from his old surfer days. In the same story, a choice has a very short time limit, because it’s a quick decision he has to make. Understanding that led to me being frustrated by the match-3 (which is actually pretty good) less.

Meanwhile, the stories are, to me, a bit of a mixed bag. Two of them kinda turned me off with some aggressive behaviour. Yeah, I know this is fiction, and I know both the protags were into the other partner (secretly or otherwise), but… Nah. Meanwhile, the bratting was a chuckle (I’m bad with brats, but to see a skillful one makes you grin), and the Pride hookup? That was fun, hot and heavy, just as Cameron’s story is both heartwarming and hot. And then there’s the older gents, so very British, a little anachronistic… But oh so cute.

Okay, so it was mostly a good experience. Helped by some excellent art, some not-bad animation, a decision timeline (emphasis because yes, this makes playing and experiencing so much easier, a good quality of life feature!) and music that really fit the mood. So yes, overall, even if I’m doubtful of Marcus and Robbie.
